The Power of Communication

Communication, whether it is visual, verbal, audio, or written, is always a very important aspect of day-to-day life. Communication no matter what the form, is what keeps us connected. Not to mention the situation we find ourselves in currently during the pandemic, Zoom calls are a huge part of our lives, a new normal if you will.

Visual communication can be considered a very strong form of communication because you can do a lot with it. You visually see someone talk, show expression or demonstrate something. Visual communication also deals with graphics or logos. It is a very expressive and attention-grabbing form of communication.
Advertisements are a huge part of visual communication; they can grab attention and get the point across easily. Advertisements and logos can even have dual or hidden meanings that just add to the meaning of the brand. As an example, the brand Tostitos sells a variety of chips and dips. Within their logo, you can see in the center of the logo the brand turned the two t's into two cartoon people enjoying a bowl of dip together. One could get the implications that Tostitos brings people together. Another good example of visual communications can be seen through package design. Lays, another snack food brand that created bags of chips with faces printed at the tops of the bags. This is a great eye-catching design that makes people want to interact with the product and purchase it. There are many pictures of people holding the expressive faces on the bags of chips, up to their own faces. Lastly, Amazon is another company that has a logo with a hidden meaning. Amazon has that iconic arrow in their logo that can be interpreted as a smile but what a lot of people didn’t know, is that the arrow goes right under the “A” and “Z” in Amazon’s logo which has the meaning of their slogan “A to Z” meaning they have everything you could need or want from “A to Z”.

Verbal communication has to do with speaking. Audio communication is based on hearing. This can be found in the form of audiobooks, podcasts, music, and TV. Verbal communication and audio communication can be tied together because they are both dealing with talking and hearing something.

Written communication is very common, and it goes hand in hand with technology and even social media. Written communication can be considered anything from an email or text, to a handwritten letter which is getting rarer to see, unless it’s a Christmas card. Social media has a lot of written communication as seen when messaging friends, family, followers, and also when postings a status update. Written communication is seen a lot within a business environment. It is a very formal form of communication, for example, companies will write, emails, reports, memos, and contracts. Written communication can be used to log information and also have proof of something. This form of communication can be done without any face to face contact.
